Learn about the statutory metrological units!
According to the definition of statutory metrological units in "The Weights and Measures Act", metrological units are the reference basis for measuring physical quantities. Taiwan’s statutory metrological units are based on the International System of Units (SI), but the authority (the Ministry of Economic Affairs) is allowed to designate some other commonly-used units as part of the statutory metrological units.
Taiwan’s statutory metrological units are as follows:
Basic units: meter (m), kilogram (kg), second (s), Kelvin (K), ampere (A), candela (cd), and mole (mol).
Derived units: a unit derived from the algebraic formulae of basic units, which usually belongs to a decimal system, such as the square meter (m2) of area, Joule (J) of work, and Newton-meter (N•m) of moment.
Commonly used units: units which are important and broadly used in our daily life but do not belong to the SI units, such as centimeter (cm), kilometer (km), hour (h), and minute (min), which can be used along with the SI units; however, the SI units should be given priority.
