1984-1986 The government launched a poll for the "Unifying the Standards for Trade Scales" project.
Trade scales used in the market were the major objects to be unified for promoting the metric unit system. There were two types of automatic spring scales: kilogram and catty (Taikin). During that period, the government recognized the benefit of using the metric unit system for the consumers, who could accordingly do the counting more conveniently. However, when they had almost succeeded, they dropped the plan. The promotion of the metric unit system was supposed to be a global trend, and I personally agreed to that plan. After it was aborted, the government catered to the custom of Taiwan, allowing people to legally use the catty system.
